Information about ADE

ADE serves as a central source of information and support for chairs of college and university English departments throughout the United States and Canada. Membership is institutional, and chairs represent their departments in ADE activities.

ADE provides department chairs and directors of graduate and undergraduate studies a community of peers, access to the extensive information services of the ADE office, and invaluable perspective on other departments and the profession nationally. ADE has been in existence for forty years as a project of the Modern Language Association and its membership encompasses nearly 750 English departments, writing programs, and humanities divisions in all types and sizes of four- and two-year colleges and universities.

ADE’s broad membership base of departments in every type and size of postsecondary institution has made it an ideal context for discussion of curricular, professional, and administrative issues and for development of consensus about standards for the field.

  • ADE policy documents include statements on class size and workload, the use of part- and full-time adjunct faculty appointments, and the evaluation of teaching and scholarship.
  • The ADE Checklist and Guide to Reviewing Departments of English is a widely used and recognized resource. A Portable Document Format (pdf) file of the guide is available at www.ade.org for members to download.
  • Reports from ADE committees provide information, insight, and considered recommendations on critical issues. Examples include ADE reports on program assessment, staffing, and evaluation of teaching.
  • Data the ADE office assembles about national trends and conditions lends credibility to local observation.

Your department’s membership lends strength to ADE and gives your department visibility and a voice.

ADE Dues, 2012-2013

Departments may choose to renew individually or to combine with other departments, programs, or academic units to renew collectively. Either way, dues will be based on the sum total of full-time equivalent (FTE) faculty members in the departments, programs, or units that are renewing together in a single transaction. When calculating dues, departments should count all full-time faculty members and sum the fraction of all part-time faculty members, rounding to the nearest whole number. For example, three part-time faculty members who are each 1/3 FTE count as 1 full-time faculty member. Do not include graduate teaching assistants.

Units (or combinations of units) in four-year institutions with:
5 or fewer FTE faculty members    $225
6 to 13 FTE faculty members    $275
14 to 24 FTE faculty members    $375
25 to 39 FTE faculty members    $575
40 to 74 FTE faculty members    $675
75 to 124 FTE faculty members    $775
125 to 174 FTE faculty members    $975
175 to 224 FTE faculty members $1,175
225 to 274 FTE faculty members $1,575
275 to 325 FTE faculty members $1,975
More than 325 FTE faculty members $2,475

Departments or divisions in two-year colleges $125

Comprehensive membership, which prepays registration for one person at one of the ADE or ADFL Summer Seminars, is available for an additional $475.

Benefits of ADE membership include:
